New Chrysler 300C

It might be wearing a Lancia bagde – but underneath you’re looking at the all new Chrysler 300C – set to arrive in the UK in next spring, offered with just this V6 diesel engine at first, in two different states of tune. The first generation of the big saloon became infamous for its menacing, Mafioso looks, and understandably the American firm has tried to move away from that image with this heavily revised version.  The styling is much more subdued this time around, which will come as a relief to those who were intimidated by the previous car’s monster chrome grille and recessed headlights.

The overall shape is still imposing, but the slimmer grille, LED headlights and subtle changes at the rear help give the refreshed 300C greater mass appeal. Underneath, there’s a new, and greatly improved eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox for petrol versions, the same unit that appears on the latest Range Rovers and Jaguars, but the archaic five-speed ‘box continues in the diesel version until later next year.  The 3.0-litre Multijet diesel is offered with either 187bhp or 236bhp, and 440Nm or 550Nm of torque respectively.
